International women’s day 2023

Share

It’s International Women’s Day on Sunday, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. A big shout out to all females in Logistics. #IWD2023 #EachforEqual

To mark International Women’s day here are some thoughts from a few of the many females within Alliance Delivery Shipping Ltd.

“Having been in logistics for over 25 years, I have seen a number of senior boardroom appointments made to women in that time. I have been inspired by my female leaders in a male dominated environment and honestly believe that regardless of your gender, you can succeed through sustained effort and tenacity. I am proud to lead an all-female team in my franchise. We are confident in our ability to provide the best possible solution, price and service. I don’t believe that any of our male colleagues or customers doubt our expertise or commitment to being the leading same day transport provider in our area.”

Lisa Stevens, Alliance Delivery Shipping Ltd Franchisee, Nottingham, Peterborough and Lincoln.

I have spent my whole career in Logistics and it’s fair to say there’s not much I haven’t been involved in over this period of time. People often think of logistics and see the truck and driver out on the road, but there is so much more to it. The requirements are simple, a good work ethic, a logical mind and the ability to roll your sleeves up when the going gets tough, that’s what makes you a success. I started out working as a P.A. to William Stobart and my career has touched transport planning, warehousing, accounts, contract management and now as National Business Development Manager for Alliance Delivery Shipping Ltd, a strategic view into how we continue to grow our already successful same day courier service.

Sarah Gorman, National Business Development Manager

To succeed in business I have found you need to be dedicated and go the extra mile for your customers and colleagues, always share your knowledge and support people, champion the talented people you work with and challenge patriarchal behaviour when you encounter it.”

Joanna McDermott, Business Improvement Manager

“Logistics is a male dominated industry, the 2nd highest in the UK after construction, with only a 17.7% female workforce. However, within Alliance Delivery Shipping Ltd, I’m not defined by my gender, I’m defined by what I bring to the boardroom table, through operational excellence and IT innovation.”

Sonia Sweeney, Head of Franchising

“Following a 12 year career in fashion and grocery retail, moving into the male dominated industry of logistics has been a real step change, but enabled me to develop my skills and use my specialist knowledge to influence fellow leaders. All whilst balancing family life. Dreams don’t work unless you do, that’s my moto. Regardless of gender, you can reach your goals if you remain dedicated and true to your values.”

Sean Summers, Head of Marketing

Having only recently returned to full-time work after many years of working part-time, I do believe full-time working mums often need to be Wonder Women in order to achieve both their business and family aims. The logistics of juggling these demands can be a challenge, one which I am determined to combat. This means without you necessarily knowing it, you have developed the skills that many businesses are in search of to achieve success; crucial prioritisation, organisational and problem solving abilities.
